¨I recently read an article on rugby written for the uninitiated by the captain of the university team I played for 30 years ago. He ended it by saying “we’ve been to each others’ weddings and today are godparents to each others’ children.” I’ve rarely heard a better eulogy for the team spirit rugby generates in those who play the sport.
U12:
And I saw it again in my own son’s eyes last weekend, when he and his mates from the Castori Lugano took to the pitch to run, pass, push and tackle for each other, against our hosts, the Bernareggio Pirati, and other regional teams, and two visiting Under-12 sides from Ireland.
U10:
Many of you who are not familiar with rugby probably assume that it is played by mindless brutes, a game of obscure rules if any, and recoil at the idea of mud covered 6 year olds tackling each other, assuming the worst of injuries inflicted on your little darling, and mud ground into the persian carpet as a bonus… not to mention the extra laundry. Perhaps it appears so at first sight, but rugby is so much more.
U8:
It is all about discipline, athleticism, mutual respect, as well as team spirit. It’s about a funny shaped ball that doesn’t bounce right, but carries well and kicks well. It’s about an uphill struggle, using brain and brawn to outwit the opposition. It’s about standing by your mates, and picking each other up off the ground, and having another go. It’s about life.
People:
If you don’t believe me, visit the Castori website, or come to a practice session and see boys and girls aged 6-11 having the time of their lives. And if you still don’t believe me, one of these weekends tune into any 6-Nations match before kick-off, and watch grown men shed tears of pride before putting their bodies on the line for their mates… and at the end of the match watch them applaud and shake hands with their opponents¨
